SPRING BREAK / ART SHOW

Ghost Gun.

The Ghost Guns installation is comprised of 372 guns that dangle freely from unseen fishing line. These guns move with the whim of a slight breeze, pointing in all directions reflecting the randomness of being targeted and killed.

Dead Bird 2.

When I was walking down the street in Midtown Manhattan after installing my work at the Spring Break / Art Show I saw this dead bird on the sidewalk. It always makes me sad to see birds on the sidewalk trampled by pedestrians. But there’s something romantic and beautiful in the body of something that used to fly. I attempt to try to illustrate it with a little bit of life. In the original image you can’t see the eye. I would add the photos here but it’s too heartbreaking of the actual bird.

Fight Or Flight.

Is the study of the cruelty in beauty of the cycle of life. The flights of arrows made from feathers used to hunt birds is like fashioning a weapon out of a jaw bone of a man and then killing another man. These works are based off of images of dead birds brought back to life then killed again.

Comprising an area of 9,335 square feet, the Raymond Lester & Associates scale model of New York City, housed in the Queens Museum, has taken on a new meaning since the pandemic. It is a hallowed shrine to the medieval practice of ars memoriae as we yearn to emerge from quarantine to find the New York of our memory rather than the cultural blight that confronts us today.

New York I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down is a Mind Palace cum art installation, a tribute to the New York of the 1980s and 90s when artist Ethan Minsker discovered that an artistic community could provide a safe haven and joy in a neighborhood plagued by violence, deprivation, drug addiction and suicide.

New York I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down is comprised of over 50 papier mache sculptures: buildings, mailboxes, subways cars, taxi cabs and water towers. Each element is adorned with vivid colors and images. The viewer can even peer into windows to reveal interior micro-installations which include colored lights and other kinetic surprises.

Minsker’s work is devotional and ritualistic. As the pandemic and unscrupulous development has defaced the city of his dreams, he is willing his memory of a flawed but romantic city into existence through his art.
